Would it surprise you to learn that our family lives in Ohio, but our first-born is beginning college at a (Christian) university in Arizona…a thirty-hour drive from our house?

It surprised me.

But it didn't surprise the Lord.  He (apparently) has been planning this for a while (nineteen years).

Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.  ~Psalm 139:16

If we are questioning where God has us today, or the logic/location/wisdom of what is happening with us currently: don't.

Lord, You saw our unformed body, and all the days ordained for us were written in your book before one of them came to be.  Even if today's plans don't make perfect sense to us, we can trust You with our today and with our lives.  Your intentions for us are good and You planned them long ago.  We will choose to trust Your ordination of our days today.  Amen.

It surprised me that our son was not sad five months ago, when he was notified that he did not receive the hoped-for scholarship from his first-choice college, which would have allowed him to attend there.  And rather, he told me that day (with resolve and peace), that he "just wanted to be in God's will".

That evening (in March of his senior year), as I knelt bedside to say my prayers and to praise the Lord for children seeking His will instead of their own...it surprised me that a picture of a college campus flashed through my mind.

Although our son had been accepted at a number of colleges, the campus that I “saw” was not one that we had ever looked into, applied to, or even ever discussed.

But I recognized it when I saw it: Grand Canyon University.

If the Lord has used a person/experience/dream/or vision to speak into our lives…let Him.  God is not limited to our comfort zones of faith or understanding, and nor is He required to stay in the box that we tend to keep Him in.

Have we read the Bible?  Our Lord is large and unlimited in power.

God has made animals talk.

Then the Lord opened the donkey’s mouth, and it said to Balaam, “What have I done to you to make you beat me these three times?”  ~Numbers 22:28

The Lord has made the sun go backwards.

I will make the shadow cast by the sun go back the ten steps it has gone down on the stairway of Ahaz.’” So the sunlight went back the ten steps it had gone down.  ~Isaiah 38:8

And certainly, our God has given visions to many people many times throughout the Bible, and God’s Word says that there will be more to come.

“‘In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.  ~Acts 2:17

Don’t be surprised when God does something out of our ordinary.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; (6) In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.  ~Proverbs 3:5-6

Heavenly Father, we will choose to trust in You with all our heart today.  And even though it is uncomfortable for us, we will make the conscious choice to lean not on our own understanding today, but to (instead!) acknowledge You in all our ways.  Lord, we will let You lead today, and we will trust that You will direct our paths.  Amen.

It surprised me during our initial visit to campus when (after a short conversation with our son) the university admission representative offered him a job on campus within her department if he decided to attend.

It surprised me when I was leaving campus on that initial visit, and the last thing I noticed was a beautiful white flowering Gardenia bush, which smelled of Heaven and just happens to have been the favorite flower of someone up there whom I love very much: my mom.  A floral confirmation (and Gramma's blessing) over this college choice.

Are good things/bad things/uncanny things/God’s things coming together to confirm or direct our life decisions today?

Let’s not miss what God is doing in our lives!

If we are inquiring of the Lord about the direction of our life, He answers.  Sometimes directly, sometimes indirectly.  Sometimes with flowers and sometimes with fireworks, but we won’t know God’s will until we inquire about it.

David was excellent at this, and he is a great example to us.  If we wonder whether to advance or retreat in an area today: inquire of God.

Therefore David inquired of the Lord, saying, “Shall I go and attack these Philistines?”

And the Lord said to David, “Go and attack the Philistines, and save Keilah.”

(3) But David’s men said to him, “Look, we are afraid here in Judah. How much more then if we go to Keilah against the armies of the Philistines?” (4) Then David inquired of the Lord once again.

And the Lord answered him and said, “Arise, go down to Keilah. For I will deliver the Philistines into your hand.”  ~I Samuel 23:2-4

 Lord, soften our hearts and our control, so that we might inquire of Your will for us today.  And when You answer us, Lord, let us obey.  Amen.

You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.  ~Jeremiah 29:13

It didn’t surprise me when I flipped to this month on my “sunsets” calendar, and an Arizona landscape greeted me.

I didn’t surprise me that God knew the month and the landscape of where we were headed to drop off our son for school

Don’t be surprised at the lengths and the intimate-details that God will go to in order to reveal Himself to us and to prove and confirm His plans to His people.

If we will inquire of the Lord about the plans that He has for us today and in our coming-today's: then He will reveal Himself and His plans to us.

You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.  ~Jeremiah 29:13

Are we wondering today what the secret to discovering God's will for our lives is?

The secret is: there is no secret---there is just an inquiring and an obedience to the Lord.

Lord, we confess that too often we do not ask or seek You.  Help us to desire to be IN Your will, and (today) we WILL seek you with all our heart.  Amen.

  ~~~
For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.  ~Jeremiah 29:11
Would it surprise us to know that we have a God who loves us and has prosperous plans for us and our future?
Don’t let this surprise us—let this lead us in inquiring of our Lord and trusting where He leads us today…even if it is a thirty-hour drive from home.
Blessings,
Sarah
