Back and forth.

Back and forth.

I was baking pre-cut sugar cookies...and reading my Bible.

Put a pan of cookies in the oven... Set timer...Sit down and read the Bible.

Beep.  Beep.  Beep.

Nine minutes goes so fast.  But...they weren't done yet.  Another two minutes should do the (golden brown) trick.

Set the timer.

Sit.

Beep.  Beep.  Beep.

I had a lot of cookies.  Which gave me a lot of (divided) time for reading the Bible.  But on one rushing trip from Bible to oven, I knocked my water bottle off of the table where my Bible lay.  The water spilled onto the carpet...but did not soak in.  The liquid lay there in a pool, resting on top of the (non-waterproofed/non-stain-proofed) carpet.

Meaningless?
Odd?
Nothing worth noting?
A symbol to me that God will not take a back seat to my chores and tasks?  Yes.

I want you to show love, not offer sacrifices.  I want you to know me more than I want burnt offerings.  ~Hosea 6:6

My regular daily Bible reading time is spent sitting still, and staying still.  Entering into God's Word, and then (if all goes well), His presence.  This only occurs without distraction and with focus on God and on His Word.

This (surprise!) did not occur today: I was too busy doing other things for God to speak to me through the Bible.  So (I believe) that He spoke to me in a different way.

My experience with three kids and lots of spills has taught me that water spilled onto a carpet should sink in to the carpet.  Not rest on top of it.  Unless...someone (Someone) is trying to make a point.

God had a message (lesson) for me today, and you just might be able to benefit from it too: Slow down.

“Be still, and know that I am God"...  ~Psalm 46:10

The world says to rush, rush, rush.  Over-plan, over-schedule, over-commit.  But our Lord never says that in the Bible.  He says for us NOT to be like the world in their haste-of-days.

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.  ~Romans 12:2

God tells us to slow down and even to sit down with Him, in order to connect with Him and to be like Him.

As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. (39) She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. (40) But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”

(41) “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, (42) but few things are needed—or indeed only one.  Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”  ~Luke 10:38-42

The cookies got baked...but I learned a lesson (again).

Are we trying to fit God into our schedule?  Do we read-His-Word/pray-to-Him/tune-into-Him when it works for us?

Shame on us.

Our Lord is holy, and He deserves the very best of what we have to offer Him, and that includes our time and attention.
Even if we are doing "good things", there is nothing that God desires more than us.

I want you to show love, not offer sacrifices.  I want you to know me more than I want burnt offerings.  ~Hosea 6:6

Let's slow down today.  Let's settle down and lock in...to the Lord today.  Let's give God the honor that He is due.

Father, please forgive us when we get out of hand and out of line in our reverence to You.  Stop us from "doing" and draw us near in cleaving to You.  We know the benefits of being close to You...reach out for us all over again today, and may we heed Your call.  Might we slow down.  Please, let us relent in schedule and output, and instead be intentional in our intent to seek You above all else.  Stop us in our tracks today, Father.  In Your Holy Name we pray.  Amen.

Blessings,
