When I was a mom of three young kids, my parents ordered me a monthly subscription to Good Housekeeping. During such a busy and exhausting time of my life, that magazine was like a paperback vacation sometimes. Short, quick stories, anecdotes and even advertisements could sweep me away, ground me, or encourage me in a moment when I needed it.
One of my favorite page-sections in the magazine was entitled "Good enough Housekeeping", and it had tips and tricks and even short-cuts for handling things around the house quickly or mostly...if time or energy didn't allow for the complete and thorough job.
What a relief it can be to know that all that we have is enough sometimes, even if it is not a lot.
Better than a magazine...the Bible provides us with God's tips for life and He understands us and the demands on our lives, hearts, and minds. He knows us and He loves us, even when our offering is less than robust.
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. (29) Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. (30) For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” ~Matthew 11:28-20
What a relief it is to know that even when we don't have much left in us, all that we have is plenty for our Lord.
It's okay to come to God just as we are today. Tired, weak, and empty. Hurried, harried, and needing-to-be-carried.
It has always been God's plan for us to seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him. He knew that we would often not be "up" for it, but He also knew (in His divine sovereignty) that we need Him. And regardless of our "state of spirit", our Heavenly Father is always here for us. Not because He needs our offering or obedience, but simply because He loves us enough to know that we...need...Him.
“The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by human hands. (25) And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything. Rather, he himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else.
(26) From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands.
(27) God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us. (28) ‘For in him we live and move and have our being.’ As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’ ~Acts 17:24-28
The Lord says that it is okay if we have fallen (or rushed) into a busy and exhausting time of life. He's here, and we do not have to "clean up" or "be better" before approaching Him today.
Our Lord doesn't need perfect faith from us. He loves us always. He will take us as we are today. He will take good enough faith, and then we can rebound and rebuild together.
“And he arose and came to his father. But when he was still a great way off, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and fell on his neck and kissed him. ~Luke 15:20
Today, let's give ourselves the grace and space to not feel inept if we are not able to dig deep into the Bible and mine spiritual gems from the depths of God's Word and verses. We absolutely should study the Bible intently, and only by doing this will we progress in our faith and in our understanding of God.
But today...it's okay if we (only) have "good enough faith".
Instead of one hour studying the Bible, we might have one minute. Take the "verse of the day", and run with it. It can be enough today.
We are enough today, before the Lord. Even if our time or energy doesn't allow for the complete and thorough job that He deserves.
What a relief it can be to know that all that we have today is enough for our Savior today.
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. (17) For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. ~John 3:16-17
One of my favorite things about the Bible (God's Word) is that over and over He professes His love and acceptance of us, even when we are far from measuring up. Let's let God's grace save us today.
Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. (23) They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. ~Lamentations 3:22-23
Let the Lord and His Word sweep us away, ground us, and encourage us if we need it today.
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. ~Matthew 5:3
Let's offer God a prayer today, and we don't even have to think it up--we can have "good enough prayer", and pray someone else's...David's prayer from the Bible. God won't mind.
O God, You are my God; early will I seek You; My soul thirsts for You; My flesh longs for You in a dry and thirsty land where there is no water. (2) So I have looked for You in the sanctuary, to see Your power and Your glory. (3) Because Your lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise You. (4) Thus I will bless You while I live; I will lift up my hands in Your name. (Psalm 63:1-4). Amen.
Blessings,
sarah
