Would you believe that I have had three spills today?  Yep--three different times I spilled three different things, and really--can the pouring out of anything be good?

The first spill was while I was lifting a pickle jar out of the fridge, except that the lid was not tightened on the jar, and--in a blink, pickle juice (and pickles!) covered the bottom shelf of my refrigerator and was running down the outside of the fridge door. The sticky green juice spilled out everywhere.

My second spill spawned from the first.

Part of my pickle-juice-cleanup-process involved spritzing my homemade simple (cleaning) solution of vinegar and water, but as I spritzed, the liquid ran low, and so I unscrewed the lid and poured in some more vinegar and filled the rest of the bottle with water, and then the phone rang, and life went in a different direction for a time.

But somehow my elbow found the uncapped spritz bottle, and now vinegar and water solution poured out like a drink offering onto my floor.

I cleaned and wiped things up, which led to a new load of laundry needing to be done, but then I noticed that my bottle of fabric softener was nearing empty.  As I refilled this (smaller) bottle of fabric softener with more liquid from a larger bottle, guess what happened?

My third spill....fabric softener this time.

Is anyone else having this kind of (physical/metaphorical/emotional) spilled...poured out...like-drops-falling-to-the-ground kind of day?

Can the pouring out of anything be good?

Well--what if the spilling-over and the pouring-out was a good thing?  The best thing, actually?

Could Christ be reminding us of His good overflow and a positive pouring-out?

My mind flashes to the cross.

But when they came to Jesus, they saw that he was already dead, so they didn’t break his legs. (34) One of the soldiers, however, pierced his side with a spear, and immediately blood and water flowed out.  ~John 19:33-34

Jesus, our Lord and Savior poured out His blood and love for us on the cross.  Scripture says that it flowed out of Him.

Some spills can carry significance.

~~~
Even before Jesus went to the cross, He spilled blood for us.  While He prayed and knew what was about to come upon Him, Jesus was in anguish, and as he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.
On reaching the place, he said to them, “Pray that you will not fall into temptation.” (41) He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed, (42) “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.” (43) An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. (44) And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.  ~Luke 22:40-44
Again, some spills can carry significance.
~~~

Jesus spilled (gave) His blood for us in a variety of meaningful and sacrificial ways because of His great love for us.

How can we be poured out like a drink offering in order to honor Jesus today? In what meaningful and sacrificial ways can we seek to emulate our Savior?

Do everything without grumbling or arguing, (15) so that you may become blameless and pure, “children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.” Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky (16) as you hold firmly to the word of life. And then I will be able to boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor in vain.

(17) But even if I am being poured out like a drink offering on the sacrifice and service coming from your faith, I am glad and rejoice with all of you. (18) So you too should be glad and rejoice with me. ~Philippians 2:14-18

Some spills can carry significance, and even though they may involve us getting into sticky life-situations, or getting surprised by a turn we didn't expect life to take---The Lord has purpose in all things, including life's spills.

Can the pouring out of anything be good?

Yes.

Blessings,
