Do we feel like life is dragging? Or maybe more specifically...it's as if we are lagging?

We want to be further along than we are today, and yet. Here we are. Not as far along as we wanted to be. Not as developed/accomplished/finished as we wanted to be.

Slow.

Slow. Slow. Slow. The time, the healing, the progress, the maturity, the fruition is not here yet.

We are still in the journey. The slow....sometimes arduous...sometimes mundane journey. Every day brings...another day, and we are moving in the right direction but so slowly, Lord!

We never thought it would take this long.

~~~
This morning our son noticed a trail in our backyard grass. Can you see it too?
A second glance outside showed us who had trudged that path...s-l-o-w-l-y.
A painted turtle had made-his-way to our back patio and as we enjoyed watching him for a few minutes, I realized that he was not sad, frustrated, or disappointed with how long it had taken him to move through our big back yard. Not at all.
That painted turtle was created to go just that speed as he moves forward. He is not unhappy with his progress-- because he is doing/living/moving/being exactly what God created him to be, and he is doing it at the speed that God intended and purposed for him to do it at.
~~~

Maybe today (or for quite a few s-l-o-w today's), we have an impediment. It might be a spiritual/physical/emotional/intellectual hurdle that has slowed us down.

Something may have slowed us to a turtle's pace.

But have we possibly considered that going at a turtle's pace is not a bad thing? That perhaps, we were created to be going this slow (or even stopped) speed right now.

Could there possibly be purpose in the patience that is required in our circumstance today?

Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; (4) perseverance, character; and character, hope.   ~Romans 5:3-4

What if we stopped being sad, frustrated or disappointed with ourselves because of our pace (or lack of pace). And--what if we stopped being sad, frustrated or disappointed with our Lord about how s-l-o-w-l-y we are progressing.

Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.  ~James 1:12

Let's consider today that (Gasp!), we are created to go just this speed as we move forward today.

What if we stopped being unhappy with our progress and accepted that God might be showing us) that we are doing/living/moving/being exactly what He created us to be doing...and at the perfect pace for the plans that God has for us. Even if they seem like slow plans to us.

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. (9) “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.  ~Isaiah 55:8-9

What if right here and right now is just the speed that God intended for us.

For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives, (10) so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, (11) being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, (12) and giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light.   ~Colossians 1:9-12

What if we enjoyed the journey and it's duration today, instead of asking "Are we there yet?"--again.

Why do you complain, Jacob?  Why do you say, Israel, “My way is hidden from the Lord; my cause is disregarded by my God”?  (28) Do you not know?  Have you not heard?  The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth.  He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. (29) He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. (30) Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; (31) but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.  They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.  ~Isaiah 40:27-31

Keep moving forward slowly-but-surely in the (often slow and arduous) pursuit of persevering in God's Name. We are right on track today, and we are at the pace that God has set for us for today. Keep plugging along!

  • Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.  ~Galatians 6:9
  • Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.  ~James 1:12
