Happy Father's Day.

What does this mean?  What makes a father happy or to have cause for joy on any day, or...today?

The father of godly children has cause for joy. What a pleasure to have children who are wise.  ~Proverbs 23:24

We all have a father...a dad.
Some man begot us and was the reason we are here today.  Happy Father's Day to him today, whether present or passed.  And if the father of godly children has cause for joy...have-we/did-we/are-we bringing our earthly father joy?

Did-he or does-he experience pleasure because we are children who are wise?
It's a bit of a loaded question, and one that can stir up a few (yesterday) regrets in answering.  (I'm sorry, Dad.)
But perhaps reviewing and reflecting on Proverbs 23:24 can make us a more godly child (at any age) to our dads today.

When we are young and our dad's give us instruction, we just don't know any better, and then we get older and we think we know better than them, but the truth is, our dad's and their instructions are wise and seasoned, and valuable.  And our Heavenly Father knows that.

God's model for fathers in a parenting role (and a child's response) is on purpose and with purpose.

  • Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.  ~Proverbs 1:8
  • Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.  ~Proverbs 22:6
The Lord knew (knows!) exactly what He is doing with the roles and influence of our fathers over us.  The father-child relationship and covenant intended by God is good, and is for our good.
  • “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you."  ~Exodus 20:12

It's a great verse, and it makes us mull over our childhood and adulthood with our father's.  But (in addition) let's consider Proverbs 23:24 again as we also seek to wish our Heavenly Father a happy Father's Day.

The father of godly children has cause for joy. What a pleasure to have children who are wise.  ~Proverbs 23:24

Are we (and our decisions/affections/attentions) a cause for joy to our Heavenly Father?  Does our Heavenly Dad take pleasure in our wisdom as it relates to Him?

Happy Father's Day, Lord, from us...Your children.  (So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir.  ~Galatians 4:7)

Happy Father's Day to our Heavenly Father.

With or without an earthly dad...we have a Heavenly One that has already called us His.
Have we responded?

Look off in the distance--He is waiting with open arms for us.
Look into His Word--He invites us into relationship with Him today.
Look into His heart--He is yearning for reunion with us.

I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. (19) I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants.’
(20) So he got up and went to his father.
“But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.

(21) “The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’
(22) “But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. (23) Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate. (24) For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’
So they began to celebrate.  ~Luke 15:18-24

It's a good (Father's) day to reflect: Are we bringing our Heavenly Father joy and pleasure?

We can.

The father of godly children has cause for joy. What a pleasure to have children who are wise.  ~Proverbs 23:24

No matter how grown-up we become, we will always have the opportunity to provide our Heavenly Father with joy by being godly and wise in respect to Him.

And today, we can.

Happy Father's Day, Heavenly Father.

Blessings,

sarah
