Let's make a beautiful noise (vocal or instrumental) unto the Lord today.

Why?

Because (at the most base level)...He has delivered us from sin and the power of sin over us.

My lips will shout for joy when I sing praise to you—I whom you have delivered.  ~Psalm 71:23

The beautiful, melodic, special outpouring of sound involved in making music (with our voice or with instruments) is special.  It is a gift from God, and while we all have different gifts, I have to give a shout out today to those who can shout it out in harmony and in key and in pitch.  And, let's say "bravo" to those using a bow across the strings or a puffing into a trumpet, tuba, or flute.

Music brings about something special in our spirit and music has a special place in God's holy heart too.
It must.
Because God includes music and the sounds of instruments and singing voices regularly, repeatedly, and purposely within the Bible (His Word).

While imprisoned on the island of Patmos (for boldly sharing the truth-of-Christ with others), the Lord gave the apostle John revelations of what's-to-come, and in Revelation 14, John saw the Lamb standing on Mount Zion, and with him were 144,000 who had his name and his Father’s name written on their foreheads (Revelation 14:1).

John gets this beautiful glimpse of Christ (the lamb) returning, but the Lord doesn't just give him a visual peek...God allows John to hear the (vocal and instrumental) worship surrounding His Son's appearance.

And I heard a sound from heaven like the roar of mighty ocean waves or the rolling of loud thunder. It was like the sound of many harpists playing together.

(3) This great choir sang a wonderful new song in front of the throne of God and before the four living beings and the twenty-four elders.  ~Revelation 14:2-3

The Bible says that there will be vocal and instrumental worship where God the Father and Christ the Son are.

Let's praise Him with music today!

Praise the Lord.  Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heavens. (2) Praise him for his acts of power; praise him for his surpassing greatness. (3) Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet, praise him with the harp and lyre, (4) praise him with timbrel and dancing, praise him with the strings and pipe, (5) praise him with the clash of cymbals, praise him with resounding cymbals. (6) Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.  Praise the Lord.  ~Psalm 150:1-4

The Bible says that there will be vocal and instrumental worship where God's presence presides.  Let's enter in to worshiping Him today...like David did.

  • (5) David and all the people of Israel were celebrating before the Lord, singing songs and playing all kinds of musical instruments—lyres, harps, tambourines, castanets, and cymbals.... (21) So David said... I will play music before the Lord.  ~2 Samuel 6:5, 21
  • When the builders laid the foundation of the temple of the Lord, the priests in their vestments and with trumpets, and the Levites (the sons of Asaph) with cymbals, took their places to praise the Lord, as prescribed by David king of Israel. (11) With praise and thanksgiving they sang to the Lord“He is good; his love toward Israel endures forever.”   And all the people gave a great shout of praise to the Lord, because the foundation of the house of the Lord was laid.  ~Ezra 3:10-11

We can make that (musical worship) choice today, too.

Can we play the bass, fiddle or violin?  Do we know how to do the fingering of notes on a clarinet, saxophone, tuba or flute?

Are we/were we in choir once upon a time?

And even if we don't feel that we have a musical bone in our body: let's worship the Lord today!  God never mentions a necessity in being on-key or in performing in complete harmony, but (repeatedly and consistently), the Bible refers to music as a human response to God's greatness and glory.

Sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth. (2) Sing to the Lord, praise his name; proclaim his salvation day after day. (3) Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous deeds among all peoples. (4) For great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; he is to be feared above all gods.  ~Psalm 96:1-4

The Bible says that some of us have a call and an appointment to serve the Lord with music.
Is it us today?

David told the leaders of the Levites to appoint their fellow Levites as musicians to make a joyful sound with musical instruments: lyres, harps and cymbals.  ~I Chronicles 15:16

In the church sanctuary/in our home/in our minds---do we have to be in a good "mood" or attitude to praise our Lord?
Do the circumstances/songs/surroundings need to be "perfect" for us to get involved?

If life is hard...are we silent?

Do we mumble the words and verses when it's time to sing worship songs and hymns at church?

Nowhere in the Bible does it proclaim that we should only praise God when life is good and easy.  But we can find a number of great examples of people praising Him in the hard.  Like Paul and Silas after they had been beaten with rods, shackled, and put in jail.

That very night they were heard praying and singing hymns to God.  And we should note: they were heard.

In their struggle, in their injustice, in their unfair and brutal treatment---people could have heard Paul and Silas curse God.  But instead, the other prisoners were listening to them praise God.

The crowd joined in the attack against Paul and Silas, and the magistrates ordered them to be stripped and beaten with rods. (23) After they had been severely flogged, they were thrown into prison, and the jailer was commanded to guard them carefully. (24) When he received these orders, he put them in the inner cell and fastened their feet in the stocks. (25) About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them.  ~Acts 16:22-25

Worshiping the Lord with our voices or an instrument is a choice.

Let's make it for Him today.  Let's honor God today with voice or instrument.  Let's praise God today.

If vocal and instrumental music plays such a prominent part for God in worship (which is why He mentions so many examples of voice and instruments)...then why isn't worshiping God with our voice or instrument important to us?

The more we read and appreciate God's focus on musical worship...the more we can realize how much it matters to Him.

Shouldn't it matter to us?

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.  ~Colossians 3:16
