I was happily barrelling down a two-lane country road on my way to an appointment when I came up upon a truck towing a trailer of hay bales. It was moving slowly.
I had been making good time, but I had to press the brakes for this truck now in front of me.
As I began to slow, I looked around. I was approaching a big farmhouse with fields of crop surrounding it. It looked so peaceful in the early light of the day.
My slower pace gave me time to take things in, and I let my gaze float to the top of the silo that stood next to their barn. There was a metal ring that wrapped around the top of the silo, almost like a railing around it, and on top of that silo...on top of that railing...sat a big beautiful bald eagle, peering out at the world, and me.
And I was able to glimpse him because a truck full of hay pulled out in front of me and caused me to slow down long enough to take in my surroundings.
I love bald eagles. I love most birds, (the bigger the better) and you don't get much bigger than a bald eagle...or more regal.
I delighted to see that eagle yesterday morning.
You might not have known that I like birds, especially bald eagles. But God did.
He knows everything about you and me...because he fashioned and formed us: inside and out. (For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. ~Psalm 139:13)
Yes, the Lord knows everything about us. He knows our schedule, our hustle, our appointments and our achievements.
God loves us, but is he telling us to press the brakes today?
The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught. (31) Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.” ~Mark 6:30-31
He says, “Be still, and know that I am God..." ~Psalm 46:10
A friend loves at all times, And a brother is born for adversity. ~Proverbs 17:17
For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, (36) I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’
(37) “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? (38) When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? (39) When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’
(40) “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ ~Matthew 25:35-40
...but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. ~Isaiah 40:31
Have we been "making good time" in our accomplishments and achievements and rush of life?
And for what?
Is it possibly time (is the Bible whispering in our ear) to slow down a little bit?
Not even to stop, but just to ease up...to maintain a more moderate speed...and take in all that surrounds us, albeit nature, relationships, family, current-stage-of-life, or God Himself.
Let's slow down today, Brothers and Sisters in Christ.
We are missing out on much of what God is doing when we rush-on-by and are too-busy-to-notice.
What good is it if someone gains the whole world but loses their soul? Or what can anyone trade for their soul? ~Matthew 16:26
(18) With me are riches and honor, enduring wealth and prosperity.
(19) My fruit is better than fine gold; what I yield surpasses choice silver.
(20) I walk in the way of righteousness, along the paths of justice, (21) bestowing a rich inheritance on those who love me and making their treasuries full. ~Proverbs 8:17-21
