Have we considered lately just how inconsequential we are?

I know that the world preaches that "we could be famous", and every athlete/online-influencer/author/actor/business professional hears a serpent-like whisper into our soul saying that "we are the next big thing"...

But...if we stop for a moment and step-out of our own schedule and ambitions, and if we can step out of our own self-focus...

How big are we (really) in the grand scheme of things?  
And more importantly: How big are we (could we possibly be) in the God scheme of things?

It is estimated that there are 8.3 billion people on earth, and 8.7 million living species of animals.  Scientists say that there are at least 391,000 known species of vascular plants.  

We live in a big world with a lot going on.  

How could the God of the universe (possibly) think about us when He has so much (else) to manage/control/and care for?

How big are we (really) in the grand scheme of things?  
And how big are we (could we possibly be) in the God scheme of things?

Lord, what is man, that You take knowledge of him?  Or the son of man, that You are mindful of him? (4) Man is like a breath; His days are like a passing shadow.  ~Psalm 144:3-4

And yet...

God does think about us.  The King of kings and Lord of lords created us intentionally and with specific and unique detail. God sees us.  He loves us.   He hears us today.

And...we can be real in speaking (praying) to Him today.

Open the heavens, Lord, and come down.  
Touch the mountains so they billow smoke. 
(6) Hurl your lightning bolts and scatter your enemies!  
Shoot your arrows and confuse them! 
(7) Reach down from heaven and rescue me; rescue me from deep waters, from the power of my enemies. 
(8) Their mouths are full of lies; they swear to tell the truth, but they lie instead.  ~Psalm 144:5-8

The Lord knows what we face today because He knows us.  
And out of the 8.3 billion human hearts...He knows ours intimately, and He cares about us individually.  (Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.  ~Luke 12:7).

8.3 billion people, and yet our God has a laser-focus on your heart today, and mine.  He sees His sons and daughters and He loves us...and He delights to bless us.

In realization of this Biblical fact, how can we respond today?

I will sing a new song to you, O God!  

I will sing your praises with a ten-stringed harp. 

(10) For you grant victory to kings!  You rescued your servant David from the fatal sword. 

(11) Save me!  Rescue me from the power of my enemies.  

Their mouths are full of lies; they swear to tell the truth, but they lie instead. 

(12) May our sons flourish in their youth like well-nurtured plants.  

May our daughters be like graceful pillars, carved to beautify a palace. 

(13) May our barns be filled with crops of every kind. 

May the flocks in our fields multiply by the thousands, even tens of thousands, (14) and may our oxen be loaded down with produce. 

May there be no enemy breaking through our walls, no going into captivity, no cries of alarm in our town squares. 

(15) Yes, joyful are those who live like this!  Joyful indeed are those whose God is the Lord.  ~Psalm 144:3-15


Yes, as mind-blowing as it is to receive...the Bible says that God is mindful of us.
Lord, what is man, that You take knowledge of him?  Or the son of man, that You are mindful of him?  ~Psalm 144:3

He is mindful and completely sovereign over us and our lives.  

When we (naturally) wonder how big we could possibly be in the God scheme of things...God's Word (the Bible) continually claims His allegiance to us.  And His Holy Spirit and power consistently confirm that He takes knowledge of us and He is mindful of you and me.

I'm just grateful.

Not too long ago, our family was out of town in North Carolina on a Sunday, and we were blessed to attend a large church that is quite popular for their worship music.  

To my elder sisters and brothers in Christ, the (modern worship music) songs and volume of this church might have sounded like new-fangled noise.  But I knew that we were singing Scripture when thousands of voices and hearts in the sanctuary around me cried out in unison to the Lord:

Who am I that you keep me on your mind?
God I'm just grateful for  you
God, I'm just grateful for You

All my life you've been right here by my side
God I/m just grateful for you
God, I'm just grateful for You

I knew where the lyrics were coming from, because of Psalm 144:3, and the knowledge of this verse does make us grateful and joyful:

(3) Lord, what is man, that You take knowledge of him?  Or the son of man, that You are mindful of him?

(15) Yes, joyful are those who live like this!  Joyful indeed are those whose God is the Lord.  ~Psalm 144:3, 15

The truth is...our (one in 8.3 billion) lives are inconsequential...in the grand scheme of things.

But God's Truth (the Bible) tells us that He is mindful of us, and that we are quintessentially consequential to Him. 

I'm just grateful.

It’s never too late to turn to the Lord.   And--it’s never too late to turn back to the Lord.   Do we GET IT?   King Hezekiah GOT IT.   The people in his area (Israel) had not been following the Lord, and they had fallen away from the (God-ordained) traditions that the Lord had designed to connect His people with Himself,  like going to church (Temple), and like celebrating the festival of Passover.  So they sent a proclamation throughout all Israel...inviting everyone to come to Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover of the  Lord , the God of Israel. Ever been around boys (of any age)?  They don't concern themselves with talking about   other  boys...they are not (usually) comparative that way, and would prefer to be competitive instead.  They are often contented with jokes and sounds, rather than defaming other guys or discussing their shortfalls. But...ever been around women ( of any age )?  For some sinful reason, our conversations often seem to p ick-a-little, talk-a-little, pick some more and talk, talk, talk about other women.  We  simmer into a boil as we digress and regress into unbecoming chatter about   other  women.   It's a terrible habit and yet girls in elementary school don't need to be taught how and even elderly church biddies can't quite fully withdraw.  We all still fall to condemning others  from time to time.  We have this sinful draw to make ourselves feel good by chirping back and forth and making someone   else   feel bad. The earth is the   Lord ’s, and everything in it.   The world and all its people belong to him.   (2)  For he laid the earth’s foundation on the seas  and built it on the ocean depths.   ~Psalm 24:1-2 We belong to Him, but also…our world belongs to Him: and  everything in it .   Everything.   Every tree and flower, every person, every pelican, everything. How are we responding to that glorious Truth today?   Can we praise Him today?  Can we acknowledge and absorb (and respond!) to the awesome Truth that we belong to Him :  the Creator of all things, and our Creator?   He laid the earth’s foundation ...and (even)  the earth  knows that it belongs to him ...
