Ever read a horror story? I went through a period when I enjoyed reading horror books, and Edgar Allan Poe is no stranger to me. He wrote one short story called "The Tell-Tale Heart" about a guy who killed a man and buried the dead guy's heart under a floorboard in his house. The only problem was.... his conscience. The killer thought he heard that dead heart beating, and the guilt and the madness made him confess the murder to the police.
Sound freaky? It is!
But it's a made-up (fictional) story, (which may or may not have similar themes to the Holy Spirit convicting us of sin and unresolved sin in our lives and hearts).
And while Edgar Allen Poe is a great writer, his words are fiction.
But God's word is Truth.
Then I saw heaven opened, and a white horse was standing there. Its rider was named Faithful and True, for he judges fairly and wages a righteous war. ~Revelation 19:11
If we have ever been captivated by scary stories or horror films...Stay tuned to Revelation Chapter 19. God (of course) surpasses Poe with imagery and the Truth of what's-to-come for those who do not believe in God/do not honor God/do not fear God.
And...it's scary.

Got your horror hat on? Here we go!
Then I saw heaven opened, and a white horse was standing there. Its rider was named Faithful and True, for he judges fairly and wages a righteous war.
12) His eyes were like flames of fire, and on his head were many crowns. A name was written on him that no one understood except himself.
(13) He wore a robe dipped in blood, and his title was the Word of God.
(14) The armies of heaven, dressed in the finest of pure white linen, followed him on white horses.
(15) From his mouth came a sharp sword to strike down the nations. He will rule them with an iron rod. He will release the fierce wrath of God, the Almighty, like juice flowing from a winepress.
(16) On his robe at his thigh was written this title: King of all kings and Lord of all lords.
(17) Then I saw an angel standing in the sun, shouting to the vultures flying high in the sky: “Come! Gather together for the great banquet God has prepared. (18) Come and eat the flesh of kings, generals, and strong warriors; of horses and their riders; and of all humanity, both free and slave, small and great.”
(19) Then I saw the beast and the kings of the world and their armies gathered together to fight against the one sitting on the horse and his army.
(20) And the beast was captured, and with him the false prophet who did mighty miracles on behalf of the beast—miracles that deceived all who had accepted the mark of the beast and who worshiped his statue.
Both the beast and his false prophet were thrown alive into the fiery lake of burning sulfur. (21)
Their entire army was killed by the sharp sword that came from the mouth of the one riding the white horse.
And the vultures all gorged themselves on the dead bodies. ~Revelation 19:11-21
Wow. Horror and sci-fi authors have nothing on the gruesome action and activity that God reveals in the Bible. And it is not fiction. These verses will come true one day.
If the reality of the reality of God's fair judgement and righteous war causes us to become a little frantic about any of our sin that we thought was buried under life's floorboards, and yet we hear its guilty heartbeat in our conscience...then today is a perfect day to repent.
...To turn back towards God. To be cleansed of all unrighteousness and to be clothed in His righteousness.
...and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness. ~Ephesians 4:24
In our repentance, we are granted God's forgiveness and His righteousness...and our guilt goes away.
I will greatly rejoice in the Lord; my soul shall exult in my God, for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation; he has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself like a priest with a beautiful headdress, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. ~Isaiah 61:10

If we like horror novels... we can also read the Bible! The Book of Revelation is juicy and could be on the best seller list today, even though God published it over two thousand years ago.
Edgar Allan Poe wrote some creepy stuff, but it pales in comparison to the frightening descriptions and depictions that God reveals in Revelation 19 of who the vultures will gorge themselves on (Revelation 19:21).
It will be the beast...the false prophet who did mighty miracles on behalf of the beast...all who had accepted the mark of the beast and who worshiped his statue.
There is only One True God, and we cannot worship false ones.
God will judge us, Brothers and Sisters in Christ! But we can stand with Him today to be found not guilty.
He will judge and He will one day wage a righteous war. But guess what? If we stand on the side of righteousness with Him, then we are not at war against the One who is named Faithful and True.

God's word is not meant to frighten us. But rather to call us to attention.
Faith attention.
Heart attention.
God attention.
Edgar Allan Poe can have his Tell-Tale Heart. You and I can have a happy ending.
“Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. (2) In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? (3) And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. (4) And you know the way to where I am going.” ~John 14:1-5
